Why is Communication Important?

“Why do I have to be here? This crap is not important. Everyone knows how to communicate. ”
And so began nearly every one of my undergraduate introduction to communication classes.
Sadly, communication is not easy. It's not intuitive. It is one of the most important skills we have. It's also the one we screw up the most.
Anything that is worth doing is worth communicating about. It is worth telling another human being or that collective group of humans known as an audience about our message.
Communication creates. What does it create?
Communication creates:
Change
Power
Leaders
Chaos
Innovation
Ideas
Relationships
Reality
Weirdness
Art
Risk
Rebellion
Fear
Fun
Future
Entertainment
Opportunity
Independence
Freedom
Happy 4th of July! Have a beer, burger and appreciate the freedom to communicate.
