Make Marketing Suck Less

Stop Hiding Your Speech Away & Get Visible

Are you hiding out, worried about how much of your speech you should share online, because what if you share too much and no one wants to hire you to speak?

What if someone steals your whole speech?

If you do a Facebook Live on a portion of your speech, does it devalue what you deliver on stage?

The answer is that all these questions are keeping you playing small. They keep you hiding out.

These questions stop you from sharing your message.

They stop you from making your speech, your message, synonymous with your name.

It's time to stop hiding out, stop hiding your message away because you're worried about something that may or may not happen because hiding away means that no one knows you.

And if they don't know you if no one is buzzing about you, then no one is going to be hiring you to speak, and the change you want to create in the world is going to languish in obscurity.

Honestly, I should know. I've hid out far too long in my business.

But this year, for me, it's all about being visible, all about sharing my message of the Three Word Rebellion with as many different people as I can.

Before we dive in to talk about visibility, I wanted to share with you one of the best ways to create your own damn stage and spread your message is to do a podcast interview.

My friend, PR and media strategist Brigitte Lyons, she's a friend of the pod, a past guest of the pod. She and I are collaborating on a webinar about how you can use podcast interviews to expand your network, build more relationships, and ultimately book more speaking gigs. Go to drmichellemazur.com/pod to sign up.

Now let's talk about the three big reasons why you need to create your own damn stage and get visible stat.

Prefer to listen?

Radical Transparency

Radical transparency is what gets you known for the change you want to create.

If you google Mel Robbins, Malcolm Gladwell, Sally Hogshead, Simon Sinek, and hit the video button, you'll find examples of them speaking.

Sometimes you find their whole keynote speech.

Do you think that they are worried that they won't be hired to speak because their message is out there?

Do you think events would rather play their YouTube video than have the real deal than to have Malcolm Gladwell at their event? No way, no way!

These speakers know that they will get hired because their message is out there, and it's easy to find.

But I get your point of view. I've had this problem too. I've been worried, if I give it all away, if I share freely, that no one will hire me.

Then I thought of my idol, Mel Robbins.

The 5 Second Rule is freely available online, yet I bought her book, I bought The 5 Second Journal, even though I knew I could get it for free myself. That shows you the power of transparency.

For me, as I write my next book, The 3 Word Rebellion, I'm going to be talking about it weekly on my Facebook page, which you can go and like at Facebook.com/drmichellemazur.

I've already done a workshop that shared the whole process of The 3 Word Rebellion.

The whole thing, I just gave it away.

I know that people will still work with me and buy the book when it comes out because I'm transparent and I'm sharing freely.

When you share freely, this is what spreads your message, gets people talking, and what gets you booked to speak.

You are a Rebel Leader

Being visible establishes that you're a rebel leader.

My favorite TED Talk is three minutes long and it's by Derek Sivers. It's called How To Start A Movement.

My favorite line in that talk is that your first follower transforms a lone nut into a leader.

As a speaker, you're a leader, and you need people to follow you. Otherwise, you're just that lone nut.

[Tweet “As a Speaker, you need people to follow you or you are just that lone nut!”]

You need people excited about the change you create, excited about your message, and willing to share about the change and your talk. Because this is what positions you as the leader of your movement.

In more practical terms, imagine you are up for a speaking opportunity.

It's between you and one other speaker. All things are equal.

However, this other speaker, well, he has tons of videos on his topic, followers galore, lots of engagement and comments and information that people can freely share.

Let's say you don't have that.

Who's going to get the speaking gig?

The speaking opportunity is going to the rebel leader who has the following, who has people bought into their message and excited about what they do.

This person is a draw, and you need to be a draw too. That's why you have to be visible.

Create your own Stage

The third and final reason to get visible is that you get to create your own damn stage.

I'm a big fan of James Altucher, and he wrote this book called Choose Yourself. In this book he argues that there has never been a better time to get your creative work out into the world, to choose yourself.

You don't have to sit at home waiting for a speaking opportunity to land in your lap.

You don't need a publisher to publish a book anymore.

You can get visible right now, right after you listen to this podcast.

You can schedule an online workshop or heck, why don't you do an in-person workshop?

You can go live on Facebook if that's your jam.

You can pitch yourself for guest blog posts. You can pitch yourself for podcasts.

There are so many ways you can choose yourself, you can get visible and share your message and start growing that following, start being that leader.

Next week I'm going to talk about one of my favorite visibility strategies.

This is the strategy that I'm using this year to get more people to notice my message, to spread the word about The 3 Word Rebellion.

Those are podcast interviews, podcast interviews. Being on someone else's show is one of the best ways to be visible, share your message. And hey, if you do it right, I know people who have been interviewed on podcasts and then landed speaking gigs.

Stay tuned for that episode next week.

If you know you are all in on podcasting, then I encourage you to sign up for Brigitte Lyons' webinar about pitching yourself for podcasts to expand your network, build your platform, and get more speaking gigs. You can do that at drmichellemazur.com/pod.

Stop being precious with your message.

You can't make a difference if you don't freely share it.

It's time to be visible, be seen, and be heard.
