Make Marketing Suck Less

Why Sharing Your Message Consistently Sucks (And What To Do About It)

Can we have a serious chat about being visible? About sharing your message and sharing it consistently?

Because one of the things that I have noticed is that it is hard. It is so difficult for so many of you.

I've seen that in the Rebel Messaging Audits that I've been doing for business owners and speakers who want to be thought leaders and influencers.

I've noticed consistently is that they're not sharing their message consistently or if they are sharing and showing up on social media and being visible, they're off message.

Sharing your message and sticking to your message is one of the most important things that you can do to be known for your work.

It's how you get momentum and grow your audience so that you get more clients, that you get the gig, that you reach your goals.

The key is to show up every day and share the same message.

Have you ever noticed how politicians always stay on message when they're being interviewed? I was watching Beto O'Rourke, who is running for Senate against Ted Cruz in Texas. He was on the Ellen show. It was amazing that no matter what question he was asked, he was able to pivot it back to his message.

I don't even live in Texas and I know what his message is. No PACs. Just people. Noted. I have it in my head and it doesn't even impact me.

The other day, Lou Blaser, she is a friend of the pod. She posted in a community that we both belong to, which is CoCommercial and that's really a community for small business owners to hang out to get support and get advice.

She posted something that I couldn't believe I was reading because it was about how I've been sticking to my message and this is what she said:

Anyway, I've been watching Michelle since she debuted the 3 Word Rebellion in January. I attended the very first webinar she hosted where she launched the idea to the public. I subscribed to her newsletter so I can see how she's been talking about the 3 Word Rebellion since then. I'm learning how sticking to your message looks when it's done very well. So thank you Michelle for modeling and showing me how to do this.”

I was blown away by this because sticking to my message and showing up has been, one of my biggest struggles through the course of my business.

And this year it has changed because I believe in the 3 Word Rebellion more than I've ever believed anything else I've ever done are created in this business.

This made me reflect on why.

Why don't we share our message consistently?

Tune Into the Audio:

#1. We are not excited about what we have to say

The first reason I believe we don't share a message consistently is we're not excited about what we have to say.

The first five years in my business, I talked about speaking and when I was just talking about speaking for the sake of you booking more speaking gigs, making more money, I was a bit bored with my message and I didn't promote my podcast episodes as I should have been.

I wasn't growing my audience. My audience actually kind of stagnated. It wasn't because the content that I was creating wasn't good. I just wasn't super pumped to share it day after day, week after week.

It wasn't setting my soul on fire and I believe that we need a message that we are pumped to share, that we are freakishly excited about because otherwise, we won't do the hard work of visibility.

We won't do the hard work of showing up.

And when we have a message we're pumped about sharing, we'll start to see how it's valuable to other people, how other people are impacted, and that's when we start to get excited.

#2 We get bored easily

The second reason, I believe, we don't share our message consistently and we don't stick to it, is that we get bored easily. Staying on message. Saying the same thing day after day after day, week after week, month after month, it can be boring.

Especially if you are a creative like me. You always want to be creating something new and different. Having the discipline to stay on your message is exceedingly difficult because it's super boring for you to share.

Now, I want to note it is not boring for your audience. Your audience loves the consistency because they know what you're about. They want you to be consistent.

But man, it's hard to share the same thing to talk about the same kinds of things for years in our business.

I figured out a handy-dandy workaround for this is that what I do is I try to find different angles on the same message. The easiest way for me to do this is to find new examples, new stories.

I'm always looking for 3 Word Rebellions in the wild that I can talk about and analyze. Or I'm thinking about why some messages work and why, why some don't work and I can talk about that. So I'm always looking for different ways, different angles to share my message.

#3. People will judge us if we reuse our content

The third big reason I think we don't share consistently is we feel like if we use the same content, again and again, people will judge us negatively.

This right here is my big struggle. I have created so much content. I have 400 blog posts, 120 plus podcasts, so many interviews, and articles and countless social media posts that are languishing somewhere on my website.

I've hesitated to reuse any of it because I was afraid that people would judge me.

People would be like, “oh, well, Michelle's just reusing her old stuff that's not very creative or innovative of her.”

Here's what I've realized, people don't remember.

Can you remember what you ate for dinner three nights ago? I know I can't. So do you actually think people are going to remember an email you sent them last year or last month? Do you think that people are going to remember a social media post that you shared a year ago?

They are not going to remember!

Creating valuable content that actually calls in your audience, gets you, clients, gets you known for your message, that's a lot of freaking work.

That's why the biggest mindset shift I've made in my business over the past nine months is not to create content but to create your message and your marketing as an asset that you should be using again and again in your business.

You and I are probably already creating these assets. Your 3 Word Rebellion is an asset. Creating content to call in your customers, to take them on the customer journey so that they get fired up about the work you do. Well, that's an asset.

That webinar you did once and got several clients from and then put it on the shelf. That's an asset. All of those social media posts, those are assets, videos, Facebook lives, can all be assets.

What makes them an asset is that they are valuable to our audience and they work for our business.

It is so much work to stay consistent with your message if you always have to be creating something new. When you're able to view your messaging and your marketing materials as assets,

Then you will find yourself able to show up consistently and stick with your message.
