Make Marketing Suck Less

Discovering Your One Core Brand Message When You’re a Multi-Passionate Entrepreneur

Do you often feel like you're a jack of all trades and a master of none? Do you hesitate to call yourself an expert in any one thing because you don't want to be pigeonholed into one area or one idea? Do you bring a ton of different skills and experiences to your business and the work you do in order to get your clients results?

If you found yourself nodding your head “yes” to any of these questions, you just might be a multi-passionate. I've got to say, I love you multi-passionates. You are some of my favorite clients. Also I am one of you. Multi-passionates are people who are interested in everything. They're always taking in new information or reading books, applying all of that knowledge and skills to what they do. Multi-passionates tend to be on the cutting edge of the latest trends or what's new in their industry because they are so curious, inquisitive, and always want to know more.

Now, when I talk to my multi-passionate friends, they always ask me, “Michelle, I am multi-passionate. I don't think I can have a Three Word Rebellion. How can a multi-passionate person find one core message that they can stick to?” And that's a great question. Exactly what we're going to tackle on today's episode. So let's dive in and do this.

You're listening to the Rebel Uprising Podcast. This podcast is dedicated to helping passionate business owners become recognized leaders who make more money and impact the world by turning their messy, complicated ideas into thriving thought leadership businesses. I'm your host, Dr. Michelle Mazur, and I'll be your no-BS guide in the art of building a business that gets noticed.

Each week I share strategies, tools, and insights on how to turn your complicated ideas into great messaging and solid business structures. Are you ready to create an uprising in your industry? Let's do this.

Think fast -- what do an astrologer and an aviation tax lawyer have in common? Curious, right? What would they have in common? Or how about a veterinarian and an online business manager. Or a future of work thought leader and the most creative bio writer you'll ever meet. What could they all have in common?

Well, they have all been my clients. So my secret is, even though I have a lot of knowledge on communication, messaging, speaking -- I have always been a multi-passionate, but I express it through my clients. Most people would have never guessed that I'm multi-passionate because I am laser focused on messaging, the Three Word Rebellion and marketing for the most part. But then I also liked talking about things like the last episode -- the books that I'm reading business, building mindset, imposter complex, bro marketing, all of these interests fuel my multi-passionate self, along with my fabulous clients.

But I know that being a multi-passionate, it can be really hard to identify what your message is, what type of clients you work with, how you can best explain your services in a way that other people get and it doesn't confuse them. So here are three of my big tips when I'm working with multi passionates.

And this first one is about finding the golden thread.

Alright, multi-passionates. How many of you have done an ideal client avatar exercise? Right? They're asking you, like, where do they hang out online and what books do they read? What kind of yoga clothes do they wear? And you're like, “I don't know!” If you're like me and you've worked with lawyers and astrologers and veterinarians and web designers, that stuff doesn't matter.

It's made up. Client avatars aren't actually going to be helpful to you as a multi-passionate. Instead, what I would recommend (and I learned this technique from years ago from Tara McMullin) is a virtual focus group. This is where you think about four or five of the clients that you really love.

When you're thinking about them, you want to zone in on what is it that they have in common? What did they come to you for? Because this is a process that I talk about as finding the golden thread that ties all of your clients together.

So my golden thread is that my people tend to be doing something innovative or different or they're multi-passionates. They can't talk about it. They don't have a solid message. So they're throwing things against the wall, or if they're multi-passionate, they're just posting about what they're currently passionate about. And there's no strategy there. There's no message there to build their business. That's what all of those people have in common. That is my golden thread.

So if you find yourself with a diverse clientele that comes from so many different industries, that it's impossible for you to do the ideal client avatar, screw it. You don't have to do it! Instead, look at the people you've loved working with and find the golden thread because that golden thread will be a core part of your message and it will make it so much easier to find that one core brand message.

My second tip for you: when you're a multi-passionate and you're digging in to find your core message or your Three Word Rebellion, as I like to call it, that message should never be focused on you, right?

It's not focused on all the tools that you bring, all the experience, all of your certifications. Instead, it should be focused around the change you want to create for that client. So when I'm working with a multi-passionate, we either end up developing a rallying cry -- so that's the start with “why” because that's focused on change and action -- or I've actually identified a third type of Three Word Rebellion (I'll be updating my book in 2021 to include this), but it's the declaration, right?

So this is the Marie Forleo's “everything is figure-outable”, but it is a mantra for them to remember and to use. And it cuts across all different industries because it's about the change you're creating or the change agent that they're using in order to reach their goals.

So think about what results your clients get. What change you want them to create. Do the exercises in the Three Word Rebellion book around change and go deep. I always say people are not going deep on the change they want to create in the world because they think, “Oh, but what if I can't do it?” “What if” doesn't matter. The “how” doesn't matter for this. It's really about the world you envision for your people. That's where your core message will come from.

So when you can use that golden thread and understand what binds all of those people together, and then get clear on the change you want to create, you can have your core message come from that.

The third and final tip I want to give you is as a multi-passionate, we have this habit of wanting to share everything that we're learning all the time.

So if all of a sudden you start learning about human design and you're down the rabbit hole with that, all of your posts on social media become about human design and the a-has that you're having instead of really being focused on your core business.

So here's a very important takeaway: you don't have to share everything you're learning with your audience. You don't have to share all the tools you get to use results. You don't have to share every rabbit hole you go down. You don't have to share everything you're thinking or learning, especially if it's not relevant right now to what you want to be selling in your business.

Now I have a client who is multi-passionate and she is one of the most creative people I know, like she's always able to write social media posts on the fly. She gets a million ideas during the day. But then she would post them right away and it would distract from whatever it was she was marketing, whatever it was she was offering. So when we're in that creative stage, we have to put things on the idea shelf, knowing that when it's appropriate, you can come back and share that with your audience.

With your message, you've got to stick with it for the long haul, which is so hard for multi-passionates. Let me just recognize that. Because once you find your Three Word Rebellion or you get your new messaging, you're like, “Ooh, it's shiny and new. It's fun to share!” But when all of a sudden when you're six months in, that's when it becomes more difficult, that's when your interests are going to go other places, but you've got to stay on message so that you can use those amazing skills for the good of your people.

Alright, my multi-passionate friend. I'm just going to give you one reflection question today:

What was most helpful in thinking about your message and your marketing from today's show?

I guess I'm going to give you two questions:

What's one thing you could implement right now that would give you greater clarity around your message or who you serve?
