How to Let Future You Make Decisions in Your Business Today
Today I want to talk to you about this big mindset shift that I've made this past year in my business to truly become recognized for my work and also to start building the kind of business that I want to have that makes an impact.
Also, funny story right now I am recording this late on a Friday afternoon. It is August 23rd my husband and I leave for vacation to Palm Springs, bright and early tomorrow morning.
Normally, I would just put recording this episode off because it doesn't go live until the second week of September, so there's plenty of time to do it.
But it's because of this mindset shift that I decided to get this done right now.
And that mindset shift has been about starting to make decisions as the future version of me!
I know that future Michelle who gets back from vacation on September 3rd is not going to have any time to record a podcast episode. She's got a full week serving her clients and there's no way she's going to have time to do this episode.
Future Michelle is going to be really happy with past Michelle that this is off her plate.
But more than that, we can start making big decisions about our businesses and how we're showing up from that future version of you.
On the podcast today, I'm going to tell you exactly why this is important and how to you meet that future version of you.
Tune into the audio:
Today, we're going to meet the future version of you!
And I know what you might be thinking that “oh my gosh, Michelle, this sounds so woo-woo“, but it's not.
We are always thinking about the future version of ourselves. What does future me want to have for dinner? Where does future me want to go for my birthday? What conferences does future me want to go to in 2020?
It makes sense to cultivate a relationship with that person that you want to become.
Who is future you?
And to define this concept simply, future you is just you in the future.
It could be five minutes in the future, it could be five years or 25 years.
When you're building a business and you want to be recognized for your work, you want to be sought after. You want to be much loved and renowned for what you do and how you serve the world.
The future version of you is the person who has already achieved all of that. She's the one who is already done the TEDx Talk. She is the one who has published the book that hit number one in the New York Times Best Seller list. She is the one who has built that business that is changing lives on the daily.
The Future version of me?
She's the one who has already sold the 5,000 copies of the 3 Word Rebellion book. She's the one who owns the message strategy agency where she has other people working under her to help people through the 3 Word Rebellion process. She's the one that's already working with the politicians and other influential people to help them with their messaging and she's the one who's constantly in demand for speaking and teaching.
And frankly, she's the badass. She's the one who's improving the business and lives of all the people who come in contact with her. And that's the person that I want to be making decisions from and acting as if I'm already that person.
I'm going to challenge you right now. Before we go on to pause this podcast, grab a piece of paper and a pencil and write down a description of future you.
What has that person all ready accomplished?
Write it down and then come back. I will be awaiting here for you.
Now that you have met your future self, what do you do with this?
You have this person in mind who has done the things that you want to do.
Now, you can start acting as this version of yourself. I'm going to warn you that this is going to take you far out of your comfort zone.
You are going to do things, say things and show up in ways that present-day you would never do, but the future you is 100% all-in on.
Here are a few examples from my own business.
Every big business decision I've been making, I have really been asking myself what would the future version of me do.
For instance, a couple of months ago I did a podcast interview with Katya Varbanova who is working as my director of marketing.
Hiring her and her team was a scary decision. It was a scary investment. It was really me stepping up into more visibility and I couldn't make that decision from who I am today!
Present Michelle was like, “Oh, lots of money. I don't know, that's scary“, but future me was like, “Yes, this is how you get the book into more people's hands“.
Another thing that I've been working on behind the scenes in my business is really investing in the client experience that I create.
I have to say most of my clients I hear all the time that it's fun to work with me. They really enjoy it and I just want to make sure the tech and the systems that I'm using enhance that experience for them as well.
I'm investing in Dubsado. I'm creating videos to help my clients better implement their 3 Word Rebellion after I finished working with them and even some videos that help them with their playbooks.
This is exciting because these are the systems that future me needs to have that agency.
What I want you to know is that when you tap into that future self, it's going to change how you show up in the world and how you navigate your world.
Would future you resist setting a boundary with the client? Would future you say yes to that big speaking opportunity, even though it only pays in exposure?
How would future you show up in your business, would she hideout and hide her brilliance or would she ask for that sale?
Would she feel guilty about sharing her knowledge or would she think it is bragging to her expertise and her background?
No, she absolutely would not.
Future you is how you make those big audacious goals come true. It's how you start making the leap with some sort of certainty.
Since you have already met this person, it's time to start acting like this for a future version of yourself now so that you can reach more people and finally be recognized for your work.
One of the things that I have realized with my work is that your 3 Word Rebellion appears when you are ready for that message.
When you are acting as that future you. I would like you to join me for this experience that I'm hosting absolutely free.
It's called the Future Influential You Challenge. It's five days of stepping out of your comfort zone so that you can reach more people and be recognized for your work. And the future you is already like yes, I'm in.
Go sign up now. And here's a little bit about what we're covering during this five-day experience where you're going to meet that future version of you and act like her.
I'm going to teach you about the five principles of influence and you are going to start applying those with integrity to your business now. You're also going to get out of your comfort zone and stop waiting for permission to own your authority and just own your brilliance.
It doesn't matter whether you have a following of 10,000 people or one person, It's about showing up consistently in your power for five days. The best part for me is that you're going to surround yourself with the support of other high achieving business owners who are also acting like that future version of themselves.
We start the challenge on Monday, September 16th and you can sign up and find out more here. If you're on the fence about it, you should really check in with future you and ask that person, do you want to start acting as a recognized expert who is sought after, much loved, and renowned for their work right now?
And if future you says, yes, then you need to sign up.
Remember tapping into future you is how you close the gap between where you are right now and where you want to be.
